How EV leasing companies use routing to reduce customer churn

EV leasing has a retention challenge that combustion leasing does not. A lessee who experiences range anxiety, unexpected charging stops, or a journey failure attributes those experiences to the vehicle and, by extension, to the leasing company. Routing capability embedded in the leasing product directly reduces the frequency of those experiences and the churn that follows.

The mechanism is straightforward. An EV lease customer who cannot reliably plan a 300 km business trip will not renew. A lease customer whose app confirms the trip, identifies the charging stop, and delivers both accurately has a fundamentally different relationship with the vehicle. The range is not a source of anxiety. It is a managed variable.

Most EV range complaints from lease customers are not actually vehicle failures. The vehicle performed within its specification. What failed was the expectation, the gap between the WLTP figure the customer was sold and the real-world range they are experiencing. Closing this gap proactively, through a journey planning tool that shows real-world range rather than laboratory figures, prevents the complaint before it forms.

The second driver of EV lease churn is the experience of failed or anxious journeys early in the lease term. A lessee who has one bad experience: running low on an unfamiliar route, arriving at a charger that was listed as available but was not — develops a mental model of the vehicle as unreliable. That mental model is hard to dislodge and is the primary predictor of non-renewal.

Leasing companies that have integrated routing into their customer-facing apps report a consistent pattern: lessees who use the routing tool regularly have materially higher renewal rates than those who do not. The routing tool does not just help them plan trips. It changes how they relate to the vehicle, from something they are learning to trust to something that tells them what it can do.

Arval integrated Chargetrip routing into the My Arval app to give their lease customers across Europe confidence before every journey knowing exactly where they can go and where to charge if needed. The routing capability became part of the product proposition, not just a technical feature.

The implementation options range from a full API integration for leasing companies building their own app to Chargetrip's No-code route planner for those that want to go live quickly without development resource.
